My rating-★★★☆☆
My review-
This book cannot be called a novel, it is more of a guide, a guide which talks about religion.Living in a land obsessed with religion, this book comes as an eye-opener.
Here the author talks about the difference between being religious and being a part of an organized religion.Throughout the book, there are simple anecdotes and personal experiences whereby the author reveals the hypocrisy existing in the society which is ingrained into people ever since birth. The so called religious-babas are the ones who claim to be the "gurus" on one hand but on the other they themselves embark on the journey completely opposite to their teachings.
Humans, today have forgotten the original teaching of the mystics, who were the founder of their religions, and have manipulated them according to their own necessities. Money and greed have become the culprits whereby people have resorted to twist the teachings and resort to stupid practices- something like fasting to get the desired results or giving tons of money to some self-proclaimed saint to wash away their sins.
They have forgotten that religion was made to make human humane, instead they have organized themselves to meet their selfish ends, become chauvinistic about their propaganda and have been forced to live dissatisfied lives under the constant fear of heaven and hell.
In contrast to this, the author reveals the pizza religion which the current generation seems to follow- where they believe in the motto of "live and let live" thus paving their way away from the religious chauvinism. It is this religion which should ideally be followed by people for it is this path which will pave the way towards a happy, satisfied spiritual life.
The book as a whole reflects the message from PK (Aamir Khan's movie if you remember), the real life incidents making the experience more real. It is an eye opener- things written in it might be known but is not exactly followed, for the hypocrisy creeps in somewhere.
The message is pretty clear by the middle, in the later parts the narration becomes repetitive, somewhere giving a feeling that the author is trying to force his concept of pizza religion on the readers (he has already cleared his intentions though). Also certain parts are a bit exaggerated. For instance the author feels homosexuality arises in ashrams as the disciples are forced to maintain celebicy- now this is a very wrong concept.
Similarly there are some other places where things seem to be overdone.
The book on the whole is very informative, not at all for religious-minded people, they would be very offended, but it is quite a refreshing read for open minded people who use their brain to sepersep right from wrong.
Writing style-
The writing style is in the form of some sermon but the instances make the experience real. Each chapter ends with an advice from the author. The writing is lucid and you won't get anything that you don't know already, but the author points out exactly those points that should be the main focus.
On the whole this book is a good read, inclining towards spirituality and the points where society has gone wrong. Absolutely not fit for religious people- for others you will like this book- it can resonate well with your logical mind unlike the blind faith.
