About the book-
Seventeen gruesome killings across the United States, within a span of six months and there is one clear connection among victims. They were all writers.
While media is decorating the murders with sensationalist stories, and law enforcement is playing catch-up, the homicidal maniac remains elusive and secretive. Things get very interesting, when one day she decides to appear on an internet talk show for an honest fireside chat.
My rating-★★★.5☆☆
My review-
“But when you did not respect me as a reader, why should I respect you as a writer"- with this the Grammer Nazi killed her victim- a writer who didn't live up to her expectations.
This is a short story describing the chat of Grazine- the Grammer Nazi serial killer who is on a killing spree targeting authors for their grammatical mistakes- with the host of an illegal internet chat show. The story focuses on her ways of killing, her choice of targets and her reasons behind the killings.
This story, in just a few pages, has voiced a very important issue- the responsibility that writers owe to their readers. The protagonist voices the disappointment and frustration that readers face when they come across a poorly written book- be it in terms of language, plot or characters.
This story in particular focuses on the language part- which is one of the leading problems in present day writings.
The story has a certain mystery, an unsettling eeriness to it- the truth about the killer is revealed in the end. This book not only has a fresh storyline and addresses a problem among the readers but also breaks the conventional notion which portrays men as serial killers. The protagonist- a woman- otherwise normal but a serial killer in reality is another highlight in this story.
However the solution to the problem addressed here- the gruesome killings- seems to be a pretty extreme consequence. Even by the standards of fiction this seems too severe. Also the detailed murders can be disturbing to some readers.
Characters-
Grazine- she is the protagonist of the story. An avid reader, an otherwise coy lady- she represents the anger or disappointment readers feel upon investing time in a totally worthless read. She is described as a witty, intelligent, powerful lady who is a no- nonsense person and demands her importance as a reader.
Corrigan- he is the host of the chat show on which the grammar Nazi serial killer comes to talk. He works as the medium to not only exposing the grammar Nazi but also serves as her next victim. He is perhaps the most important character for the plot progression.
Writing style-
The story is divided into a past, present and future format. Most of the story is in the form of dialogue exchange on the chat show.
Written in a very easy and comprehendible manner, the narration just flows giving the readers just enough information to move forward but keeps enough away to let the suspense build up.
A short story addressing an emerging problem in the reading community- with fresh plotline, great narration and a sense of thrill, this book is something new. The only problem I found is that the story is a bit overdone and at times feel quite childish- a stark contrast to the idea behind the story. On the whole a short, intriguing read which can be completed in a single sitting.
Looking for some fresh stories- this one is your pick. This kinda story holds a great potential undoubtedly.
I would like to thank the author for providing me with the advanced readers copy.
